In the body of work 'Comfort Blankets', I use found and recycled materials combined with traditional quiltmaking techniques to express particular emotions, to explore what we all do to comfort ourselves; working with an emphasis on a personal response to everyday life and contemporary issues.
Collecting found materials; packaging, drinks cans, plastic, glass, discarded clothes, I use traditional quiltmaking techniques as a means to give these materials new form. I reinvent these 'useless' objects bringing them together as fully functional quilts.
I believe that the use of recycled materials is important on lots of different levels. It carries on the tradition in quiltmaking of using what you have to hand rather than buying new, so it is automatically inclusive - people are familiar with the materials, often handling them themselves on a daily basis. The materials have a history and carry layers of memories. It encourages a high level of creativity. The quality of the making is as important as the ideas, 'Necessity is the Mother of Invention".
